Most business Wi-Fi problems are not Wi-Fi problems. They are one consumer router trying to cover a floor it was never designed for, or a flat network that grew for a decade without anyone redesigning it. This is the work the firm exists to do.
What it costs
Cat6 drops from $225 each, terminated, tested and labelled. Design and configuration at $185/hr. Larger builds quoted fixed-price after a site walk.
The single-router problem
A great many small offices run on the router the internet provider left behind, possibly with a range extender bought in frustration. It works at reception and fails at the far end, and the failure mode is not silence — it is a device clinging to one bar, retransmitting constantly, and degrading the channel for everyone else.
Extenders make it worse. They roughly halve throughput and create a second network devices refuse to let go of. The fix is wired access points placed deliberately, on one network name, handing devices over cleanly.
Cabling is the part that lasts
Access points, switches and firewalls get replaced every few years. The cable in the walls does not — put in Cat6 properly and it will outlive several generations of everything plugged into it.
Drops are $225 each in typical commercial office construction, terminated both ends, tested and labelled. Labelled matters more than it sounds: an unlabelled patch panel turns every future ten-minute job into an hour of tracing.
Downtown, two things move that number and both get checked before quoting rather than after. Plenum-rated cable is required in most return-air ceilings. And some buildings mandate union electricians for anything in the walls or above the tiles.
Segmentation, and why insurers now ask
Guest Wi-Fi belongs on its own network with no route to your file server. So do the cameras, the door controller, the thermostat and the payment terminal — devices that are rarely patched and are a standard way into a small business network.
This is VLAN work, it costs almost nothing at install time, and it is the difference between a compromised camera being an annoyance and being an incident. It is also increasingly a line item on cyber-insurance questionnaires.
How a job runs
A site walk first, because building materials decide everything and a plan drawn from a floorplan is a guess. Brick, plaster over metal lath, foil-backed insulation and metal racking are all effectively opaque to Wi-Fi.
Then cabling, a managed switch with PoE so access points do not need power in the ceiling, a business firewall, and access points placed for coverage rather than for convenient mounting. Everything labelled and documented, and the documentation is yours — including passwords.
Anything that interrupts the network is scheduled for an evening or a weekend, planned around the building’s freight window, with a rollback written before we start.
Fixing beats replacing, often
Not every call needs a rebuild. Frequently the hardware is fine and the problem is configuration: overlapping channels, an extender that should be removed, a switch negotiated down to 100Mbps because of one bad cable, or two devices both handing out DHCP addresses.
We do not sell hardware, so an hour spent fixing that is a better outcome for us as well as for you.

Questions we get asked
Why is our Wi-Fi fine in one room and useless in the next?
Usually one router trying to cover a floor, and often a wall it cannot get through. The answer is a wired access point on the far side, not a stronger router.
Do Wi-Fi extenders work?
Poorly, and they usually make things worse — roughly half the throughput and a second network your devices will not leave. A wired access point costs a little more and actually solves it.
How much does cabling cost?
About $225 per drop in typical commercial office construction, terminated, tested and labelled. Plenum-rated cable and union-labour requirements move that, and both are established before a quote rather than after.
Do we need a separate guest network?
Yes. It is straightforward, costs nothing extra at install time, and stops a visitor's laptop or your own cameras reaching your file server. Insurers increasingly ask.
Will the work disrupt our business?
It is scheduled not to. Anything that drops the network happens evenings or weekends, planned around your quiet period and the building's freight window, with a written rollback.
Can you work with the router our ISP provided?
Often, for a small office. For VLANs, site-to-site VPN or real throughput you want a business firewall, and you will get an explanation of what it buys you rather than just a quote.
